Watch: Memphis LK - Whip
Naarm producer and vocalist blends potent percussive jungle and synthy alt-pop with addictive results
Making her return in 2022 is Melbourne’s Memphis LK, who after last year's EP1 today unveils the addictive jungle-pop anthem that is Whip.
A self-taught producer and DJ, Memphis’ productions often combine OG underground dance music styles with modern pop influences, and Whip is no exception, pairing chopped up drum breaks and rumbling bass lines with shiny, sparkly synths and LK’s saccharine vocals (shout out to the opening bars of “When you call me I don’t pick up / I just smoke the last of your bud”).
Memphis LK shares "Making dance music, I’m drawn to sounds that have conflicting moods, contrasting the hard and the soft. That’s 'Whip'. It’s kind of a breakup anthem for bad bitches." She continues "The day I started making this song, I was carrying a 15L water bottle up the stairs and I tripped and put a hole in the wall. So every time I look at the massive hole in the wall I think "Oh cool that was the day I made 'Whip'"
