Australia, it's high time you get acquainted with rising UK artist, LAUREL
Her debut album, DOGVIOLET, is out August 24 on Counter Records/Ninja Tune via Inertia.
LAUREL is a UK-based artist on the up-and-up. In recent times she's been pumping out some mesmerising singles, including Lovesick, and this week two more fantastic tracks - Crave and Same Mistakes. All of them come from her upomcing debut album, DOGVIOLET, which is due August 24 via Counter Records/Ninja Tune, and Inertia Music in Australia.
LAUREL is the complete package - her lush vocals are instantly captivating, combined with a penchant for sparse, at times haunting production, intricate guitar work and some rousing percussive moments are just some of the reasons she's been tapped as an artist you need to be across. "I wrote these songs at home often locking myself away for periods of time in order to capture the true mania that comes from love, although a beautiful feeling, it can often feel a lot uglier."
In the interest of getting the jump on her down our way, we sent her a few questions to find out a little more, and see if there's any chance we'll see her in Australia any time soon:
For those of us down in Australia who might not be across you yet, can you tell us about yourself?
My name is Laurel, I’m 24, I live in London and I’m a musician and producer... I think those are the basics!
What kinda tunes we talkin’?
Heavy love songs over beach guitars and drums. I guess you call that indie pop...
Production/writing process:
I write, produce and mix everything at home. I usually just start playing one of my guitars and humming over it until suddenly I have a completely formed song. I can’t recall what happens in the middle bits of that to be honest.
Can you tell us about your latest A/A single – Crave/Same Mistakes?
Crave is a song about needing a level of attention you will never be able to receive from one being. Same Mistakes is about thinking of your ex with somebody else.
And you’ve got your debut album, DOGVIOLET, coming out August 24, which is super exciting – what can we expect from it?
A detailed look into my diary.
Any shows coming up?
I’m playing a European tour from Sep-Nov.
What’s the rest of the year have in store?
The album and the tour, I’ve been doing quite a lot of travelling so probably some more of that and hell of a lot of summer BBQs.
Any chance we’ll see you down in Australia any time soon?
No solid plans yet but I’m really hoping to come over early 2019. Half of my family live over in Perth so I think it’s about time.
