Premiere: Mal de Mer tease a new EP, share dynamite new single Far Cough

After sharing their single Gone Fishing last year, the Perth pop trio now eye their debut EP, incoming in the next few months.

It's always been exciting being a Mal de Mer fan, but in 2021, you're going to want to be on board or risk missing out on the fun.

Since making their debut with 2018's breakthrough single Wet Socks, the Perth-based electro-pop trio have consistently excelled themselves in creating brilliantly fun bursts of danceable, homegrown pop music, bringing together influences in the more funk-fuelled disco world - Kaytranada, Tom Misch, Disclosure - with a long-time adoration of indie, R&B, soul, jazz and pop music to create something that sits in between. It's something they've shown on releases scattering their last two years - two in 2019, two in 2020 - and something that's consistently grown and evolved in the process of doing so; the trio showing different edges and facets of their sound with every release.

In 2021, however, you can be expecting a little more from Mal de Mer. The arrival of their single Gone Fishing in 2020 also brought the commencement of their debut EP roll-out; the song being the first single from their forthcoming debut EP, expected sometime early 2021. Now, we're getting a second taste today, as Mal de Mer's new track Far Cough premieres on Pilerats ahead of its official release tomorrow, January 22nd.

It's another moment of excellence for the trio that deeper solidifies their craft in bursting indie-funk, giving an exciting kick underneath their often-bright sound that takes it to the next level - really showing what they can do as they strive towards the release of their incoming debut EP. It's held down by dancing synth sections and rolling percussion, which move amongst the contrastingly more personal vocals that - as the band's Saskia Fleming explains - balances between quite intimate lyricism and the high-flying delivery of them.

"The people I've played this one to have called it 'a hairflip of a song' and I can't really think of a better way to describe it," she says on the single, which comes with cover art by Leia Duffy. "The song dives into settling for a situation that you shouldn't, and asking for changes that never come. It dives into that feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you realise it's time for you to go."

They'll be launching the track at Mojo's Fremantle on January 30th - get tickets and more information here - and as mentioned, there's a full debut EP incoming over the next few months. In the meantime, however, take a dive into Far Cough as it premieres on Pilerats below:
