Meet Gold Coast producer Teen Fiction, who writes short stories inspired by his tracks
His debut single, Have You Back, is a very fresh-feeling slice of futuristic electronic music.
It's getting harder for emerging young producers to find fresh angles within the future-bass genre, but they do exist, and we reckon Gold Coast-based producer Teen Fiction is onto something. And while the whole writing a short story to go with the music thing is very cool (and you should definitely have a read of Have You Back's story down the bottom), the track itself just has a very fresh, very clean sound to it that we're digging a lot. We hope you do to, check it out below along with a brief chat with TF to try and learn a little more.
Tell us about about yourself?
I’m just a storyteller from the Gold Coast.
What kinda tunes we talkin’?
A friend of mine described it as being "hip hop-influenced cinematic pop songs". That might not be the catchiest label for it, but it’s an effective one, so let’s stick with that, forenoon.
Production/writing process:
Every composition of mine starts with a sample, be it Chief Keef's voice looped, or something that I’ve dragged up from the darkest depths of YouTube. I utilise samples as a creative springboard, and from there I’m free to traverse all creative tangents as they come, a process that inherently feels more organic, rather than staring into a screen, trying to will inspiration into existence.
Can you tell us about your new single, Have You Back?
Have You Back is the Guardians Of The Galaxy of music - it's fun, outgoing and easily hummed along to. It's had nine lives and seen every genre. There are obvious cliches inherent in popular dance music, builds up, drops and what have you, but I’ve strived to have the track remain as devoid of these as possible.
Any shows coming up?
A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
What’s the rest of the year have in store?
If we consider Have You Back to be the first chapter, I’d very much like to think we’d see the rest of novel before the fireworks arrive.
Where can we hear more of your music?
Presently, there is not more to hear, so perhaps when might be a more fitting question. But if you haven’t read the short story that accompanies Have You Back, I’d suggest that as an appropriate destination: READ IT HERE.
