Get to know Leopard Lake, and their percussive new slice of electro-pop, Further

A meeting of some great minds within the WA music community.

Leopard Lake are a fresh Perth duo who have a very strong pedigree in Perth music. The combined strengths of vocalist Storm Wyness (Sex Panther) and producer Sam Ford (POND, Abbe May), they're only a couple of tracks into their collaborative partnership, but we're picking up what it is they're putting down. They're playing at The Bird this Saturday 24 March, and we sent 'em a few questions to find out a little more about their process, and killer new single, Further.

Tell us about about yourselves?

We are great old friends! We’ve always been involved in making music, both together and separately. Storm as a vocalist in Perth punk band Sex Panther and Sam a Producer with POND, The Silents and Abbe May. We joined forces again about a year ago when Sam started producing and recording new tracks in his studio. We were both keen to do something different and create a new sound together and that became Leopard Lake.

What kinda tunes we talkin’?

Leopard lake is a melting pot of influences. Lots of dark ambient verbed out guitar mashed with big hip hop and R&B beats, tangled up in pop songs with Storm's vocals and melodies climbing over the top.

Production/writing process:

Our songs begin in the studio, normally with the beat and a hook. Once there is a strong beat/chords and melody idea we workshop the lyrics and melody until it all makes sense and the themes of the song work together and have the right meaning for us both.

Can you tell us about your new single, Further?

Further was all based around the beat and a souring melody. It’s kind of like a big relentless roller coaster of a song, all the parts roll into one another and it’s one of the more intense tracks both lyrically and musically.

Any shows coming up?

We play The Bird Saturday March 24th with Simone & Girlfunkle and have a bunch more shows TBA over the next month!

What’s the rest of the year have in store?

The rest of the year looks super exciting! We have the release of another single along with our full debut EP which is ready to go and are already deep into writing our second release.

Where can we hear more of your music?

Leopard Lake is on Spotify and Apple Music.
