Listen: LUCIANBLOMKAMP - Comfort

The young electric maestro dishes up the second course from his approaching second LP.

LUCIANBLOMKAMP is a young man out of Melbourne with a deeper understanding than most of the electronic genre we know and love. An artist who sees music as malleable, crafting individualistic sounds that people have now well and truly latched onto.

In 2014, he whet our appetites with the groundbreaking album Post-Nature, which received huge props both here and overseas. Thanks to hype surrounding the release, LUCIANBLOMKAMP ended up winning FBi Radio’s Northern Lights Competition which snared him a spot on the bill at Reykjavik’s Iceland Airwaves Festival (alongside the likes of Caribou and The Flaming Lips). So it’s fair to say Lucian got off to a flying start and he certainly isn’t putting the brakes on.

The first we heard from the producer in 2015 was in August when we copped From Afar, an atmospheric and distorted beat construction highlighting the dude’s vast sound palette. And now comes Comfort, the second track off his forthcoming second album, Bad Faith. Released via a series of Instagram teasers which Pilerats were very stoked to be apart of - check it all out via his INSTAGRAM and the hashtag #lucianblomkampcomfort.

Funnily enough, Comfort doesn’t make me feel all that comfortable but I love it! A track bed founded on wailing metallic groans and clashing drum loops gives the piece this haunting and almost edgy feel.

As with a host of his releases, BLOMKAMP’s vocal is sadly sweet, melting over what transforms into a mesh of complicated off-kilter audio. I’m immediately reminded of artists like Shigeto and Baths who thrive in this messy and often non-sensical production space. I really hope someone expresses this tune in video form, as I reckon the result could be something super special! For some reason I’m getting an individual lost somewhere in a ghastly snow-covered forest…

Shut your eyes and see what comes to mind with this playing:
