Kiwi producer BAYNK drops smooth double-A side Be In Love/Years, get to know him here

A kid who just happens to be the fourth most streamed artist out of NZ right now!

New Zealand-based singer/songwriter/producer BAYNK has been doin' just fine in his homeland, currently the fourth most streamed artist behind little known acts as Lorde and Crowded House, and we definitley think it's time Australia got on board. He's just dropped a new double-A side called Be In Love/Years (grab it HERE), and it's some of the smoothest indie-electronic music we've heard in a while. And while he has just announced his debut US headline tour, we get the feeling Aussie fans will be getting better acquainted with him before the year is out. Get to know him a little better ahead of that happening, below:

Tell us about about yourself?

Hi. My name’s Jock and I’m a chemical engineer turned electronic artist/producer/singer from NZ who just recently moved to LA. I started making music 3-4 years ago when I realised I strongly disliked chemical engineering and have not regretted that decision.

What kinda tunes we talkin’?

Kind of soft, indie dance songs. The passion for music production for me grew out of attending concerts and wanting to make the songs I’d like to hear in that situation, songs that make you want to move.

Production/writing process:

I’ve played piano since I was a kid so more often than not starts with chords and sparse melodies with minimal drum samples. If I feel the song calls for lyrics then I’ll usually take several passes at freestyling vocals into the mic and then pick and choose ideas from whatever comes out, I tend not to write anything down. A lot of the percussive and ambient elements I’ll take from field recordings I’ve gathered myself over the years. I tidy everything up in Ableton.

Can you tell us about your new double A-side, Be In Love/Years?

The double A-side is my first venture into writing real songs, I’d been solely a producer until last year when my interest started shifting into songwriting and lyrics. I felt like this project was the first time I let the vocal take the lead and built the production to support that. Be In Love talks about someone’s unwillingness to readily fall for another out of fear of rejection or what other people might think. Years on the other hand is opening up to someone fully and the subsequent realisation that this is all you’ve ever wanted.

Any shows coming up?

I’ve just announced a North American headline tour which I couldn’t be more excited about. Having the freedom to create a live show where I can control how everything from the lighting to the stage design looks is something I’ve been looking forward to since I began music. It’s such a rewarding experience to put on a show for people who’ve specifically come to see you.

What’s the rest of the year have in store?

Another large-ish EP which will come later this year. Some weird and wonderful visual concepts I’ve been developing with friends I’ve met since moving to LA which have been huge fun putting together. Getting out on the road a lot as well.

Where can we hear more of your music?

All the major musical outlets.
