Premiere: Zachary Leo - Pretty Girl
Soak up some funky, retro & catchy vibes from Naarm/Melbourne-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist a few days ahead of release
Nearly a year on from his last single Can’t Get Enough, Zachary Leo is back with a fresh cut of addictive funky pop sounds, with new single Pretty Girl out May 4 but premiering alongside its awesome music video on Pilerats today!
Fusing elements from disco & funk, Pretty Girl takes cues from the likes of Prince and Funkadelic with a modern pop twist as Leo’s vocals float above fuzzy guitar lines and a chilled yet groovy rhythm section.
On his new single, Leo explains "The song speaks of falling in love for the first time and the fear and vulnerabilities that come with that experience, particularly the feelings and emotions that people experience inside their own heads."
Meanwhile, the music video for Pretty Girl sees 70s aesthetics brought into modern times, shot on grainy film and featuring Leo alternating between performing music and domestic duties in a retro house choc full of shagpile carpet, wild wallpaper and tape machines.
Filmed, directed and edited by Brandon Carr at Mission Brown HQ, Zachary says “Brandon and I had no budget for a video, and we were sitting down listening to records and having some drinks and kind of just decided to start shooting some footage for the song. The video was shot and edited all in the same day and basically has no real concept other than Brandon and I just trying to make each other laugh during the filming. The running theme of the banana was more of an ironic part to the video as it is quite visually appealing, but I actually really hate bananas.”
Give Pretty Girl a watch and listen as it premieres on Pilerats today ahead of its May 4 release!
