Music Victoria Awards 2022 Winners Announced

Baker Boy cleans up with three awards, Julia Jacklin, Mo’Ju, Emma Donovan & Harvey Sutherland among the other winners

Following what could only have been an agonising judging process, the winners of the 2022 Music Victoria Awards have been announced at a ceremony last night that saw Baker Boy follow-up his recent ARIA Awards sweep in fine style. Taking out three awards, Baker Boy picked up Best Song for Survive, Best Regional Act, and the highly coveted Best Album award for his already acclaimed Gela.

Inducted into the hall of fame by Paul Kelly was the legendary Deboray Conway AM, whose iconic song It’s Only The Beginning was performed live at the awards by Best Country winners Georgia State Line.

"I played my first gig 44 years ago and was hooked" said Deborah Conway AM. "Music has been my lifelong map. I’ve followed the well lit way, the rocky back alleys, the detours and shortcuts, worked and played with incredible people in extraordinary places for the best and worst audiences and the worst and best sound and my interest has never flagged; how tremendous to be rewarded for doing something you would do regardless. This honour has my name on it but it belongs equally to my collaborator of the last 31 years Willy Zygier, the most musical person I know."

Helen Marcou AM & Ian "Quincy" McLean AM of Bakehouse Studios were also inducted into the hall of fame, by Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitcschin of Tropical Fuck Storm, after after spending more than 25 years helping strengthen the nation’s music culture.

"When we signed the lease on 1 Bakehouse Lane In 1991, we couldn’t have imagined that over the next 3 decades, Bakehouse would become a home and a connection to generations of artists. Everywhere we go, we meet someone with a heart-warming ‘Bakey’ story" said Helen Marcou AM and Quincy McLean AM. "We are humbled to work alongside the wealth of Victoria’s brilliant musical minds, as they interpret, elevate and define our lives in song. This induction writes our names next to giants from our community and although it’s an overwhelming honour, this recognition helps keep our flame burning."
