Cinepile: Watch the trailer for Down Under, a comedic take on the Cronulla Riots aftermath
A bit of a comedic look into the VB-fuelled riots, out August 11.
Around 6 months ago, we hit the 10-year anniversary of the Cronulla riots, the VB-fuelled, racially-charged riot that saw middle-easterners attacked by large crowds (Sydney Morning Herald recently ran a piece re-visiting the riots and the key people involved on both sides, check it out HERE). With the anniversary just gone, for some reason people decided it would make a good comedy movie, and thus, Down Under was born.
I’m going to give it credit though – despite being an upbeat take on one of Australia’s darkest days, the movie seems to cover it well. It follows the aftermath of the riots on both sides of the story through two fictional groups of hotheads, which try to protect their respective parties when shit starts to hit the fan. It is set to premiere at this year’s Sydney Film Festival, and will then be released Australia-wide come August 11.
