Listen: Mathas feat. Mei Saraswati - Free Shit

Three earnest WA talents combine for a multi-layered, future-soul jam.

Widely respected Perth-based MC Mathas, whose currently working on a new album, makes a valuable addition to his conscious rap canon by way of new track Free Shit. Mathas brings in underrated wizard Ylem for the beat and Mei Saraswati (Savoir) on the second verse, and if you know your #perthmusic, you know that's a not-to-be-messed with trifecta, right there.

The muli-WAM Urban Act of The Year winner jumps into the track with his sincere, laid-back style, his opening verse finding a nice bed in Ylem's beautiful bed of soulful electronica, and meditates on the impact of advertising on people, and the sinister ways in which brands build, then abuse, our trust, and their targeting of young people from an early age.

A fulsome chorus - with a serious level of groove - follows, before local singer Mei Sarawati slides in smoothly with crisp vocal honey, that morphs into more freewheeling vocal adventuring. Mathas is a big fan of the Perth singer, having said of her work: "I honestly believe she's one of the greatest talents this country has ever produced. Some music just taps into your heartbeat and pumps with it."

It goes both ways - indeed a great musical symbiosis between the two on the track, the breadth of their talent and love of meaningful lyrics comes across strong. Listen below:

Both Mathas and Mei Saraswati were recently captured doing intimate live performances by Perth community radio station RTRFM, in their series 'A View From Here'. Watch their performances below.

Mathas is currently touring with the Funkoars, and plays supporting them in Perth on Saturday, May 30 (tickets HERE) before a show supporting Coin Banks on Sunday, May 31, at Aviary Rooftop Sessions (tickets HERE).
