Will Smith returns to rap: hear his first song in a decade

The Fresh Prince re-joins the party. Or should we say, Fiesta.

It can't be easy being Will Smith these days. Between his singer daughter Willow making moves to be the next Erykah Badu and hanging out with Jared Leto, and actor/rapper son Jaden Smith always keeping celebrity press interest high with his weird deep tweets and weirder clothing line, Will's own career is now overshadowed by his childrens' more relevant-to-2015 achievements. But Will's still been trying to revive his rap career - recently doing the odd impromptu performance on late night talk shows and name-dropping Kanye and saying they've spent time in the studio together.

Today we heard some new material from Will, his first track in ten years. It's not a Kanye collab, it's not even a US collab - nup, Will's taken things to Colombia, appearing on a remix of the electro-trop track Fiesta, by Latin Grammy-nominated dance group Bomba Estéreo, off their album Amanacer, out on Sony Music.

The track witnesses Will Smith going in Big Willie Style in an awkward kind of Spanglish: "Hola mamacita / Go get me a beer-a / The track is the heat / I couldn’t let the beat go by without a feature." Smith himself was the one who reached out to the group while on holiday in Colombia. Smith even references his own hiatus in the track, along with his former rap persona: "No gas in me, I’m a Tesla / Teach game, sensei, professor/ Will Smith, Estéreo, the Fresh One."

Bomba Estéreo's Simón Mejia said of Smith's guest spot: "When I was told that Will Smith wanted to collaborate on a remix with Bomba, I couldn't believe it. This opportunity to work with Will was beyond anything we have dreamed of. It's not a traditional featuring – it's just magic."

A music video for the remix has recently been filmed in Los Angeles. "We all had a blast together at the video shoot, and we want to thank Will for being so warm and such a pleasure to work with ... and for rapping in Spanish!" said the band of the shoot. Will himself set the bar for beach party videos with Miami, whether Fiesta will be able to achieve Miami levels of greatness remains to be seen. Listen to the track below.
