Listen: Bree Gregory - Only You
An impressive feel-good debut single from this South Australian singer-songwriter.
From Kuarna land /Adelaide, South Australia hails a new talent, an R&B come soul infused artist by the name of Bree Gregory, who today releases her debut feel-good single Only You. A singer for many years, Bree recalls the specific moment two years ago when she got the urge to begin creating her own music, sharing “I was actually inspired to start writing and recording after hearing "cold little heart" by Michael Kiwanuka at the beginning of the tv show Big Little Lies. It immediately set a switch off that I can now never turn off. All I could do was eat sleep and breathe creating music for months and months.”
Drawing influence from artists such as Erykah Badu, Black Pumas, Chaka Khan and Aretha Franklin in her sound and songwriting, Only You sports a solid rhythm section which provides the perfect foundation for flourishes of keys and her powerful cut-through vocal melodies to thrive. On the inspiration behind the track and its lyricism Bree shares that “one night, like many since turning on the switch, I couldn't sleep, so I got up and wrote this song “Only You" at 1am and was done by 3 and is one of my favourites. I don't usually plan what I'm going to sing about. I just sit there, start playing chords on the keyboard and whatever I'm thinking comes out in words and melody. My husband must have been extra nice to me that day as it basically ended up being a love letter to him. It can really be about anyone who you feel makes you a better person.”
With an incredibly catchy hook matched with beautiful instrumentation and a sensational voice, Only You is an impressive insight into Bree Gregory’s capabilities as a songwriter and singer. Be sure to give this debut release a listen below, and try your best not to belt-out along to the chorus!
