There's no act quite like Baker Boy at the moment. The indigenous NT rapper has gone from strength to strength throughout the past year or so, continually pushing boundaries and offering something unique and exciting with everything he does. He's one of the first commercially successful musicians to sing in an indigenous language – Yolngu Matha – and has done endless hours of work showcasing and spotlighting the indigenous culture – including other musicians – like very little others have done. It's probably why he's just been announced as the Young Australian of the Year for 2019 and also perhaps why he's just inked a nice, tidy deal with Universal/Island Records, who released his latest single Cool As Hell as his first on the label.
It's a slick, polished and refined take on Baker Boy's sound that has the smoothness of a major label release without taking away from his signature authenticity, offering something true and honourable to his craft while also creating something you'll enjoy listening to. It's his most accessible single yet, with a hook-fuelled, disco-tinged collection of soft funk and Australian hip-hop coming together in a way that works – despite it feeling like a strange mix on paper. It was written alongside Thundamentals and writer/producer Carl Dimataga, who notes that the single's fun, uplifting feeling largely arises from the ease of its creation: "Everyone latched on to the concept from the first few notes of the bassline and the song morphed really quickly and seamlessly from there," he says. "Basically we all had fun making this, and I think that’s come through in the finished song."
Listen to the track below, and stay tuned for a full record in August - bound to be one of Australia's most diverse and long-awaited.
