Premiere: Perth favourite Angus Dawson releases a powerful new single, Ngurra

In his second single for the year, the Perth musician reflects on his time with remote WA indigenous communities.

Over the last few years, Perth musician Angus Dawson has stepped forward as one of our scene's most remarkable names in electronica, with his intricate blends of indie, electronic and at times, even soulful R&B, winning us over time and time again. He's released some stellar bits of music over the years – detailed and complex solo productions, collaborations with fellow Perth musician-turned-songwriting-gun Bri Clark and EPs such as last year's excellent second EP Camouflage, a release he walked through with a video track-by-track. "From opening track What We've Done feat. Bri Clark, it's a gentle journey through delicately constructed, soulful electronic gems," we said on its release six months back.

Now, we premiere something new, with Angus Dawson joining The Kite String Tangle's Exist. Recordings for their Exist Exclusives compilation – which already boasts releases by leftprojects and others. The track, Ngurra, is a reflective moment for Dawson which merges dripping indie-electronica with soulful, R&B-tinged vocals which lyrically, speak on his time working with Desert Feet – a music charity program based in West Australia that brings music to remote locations (typically indigenous) that don't often have that access. Dawson spent three years in these communities, working alongside them to introduce music and its healing properties into their lives. Ngurra is a single that talks about what he learnt during the experience, with Dawson saying "I realised during and after this trip that I had such a shallow education into Australia’s history and the culture that has existed here for 40 000+ years, making it the oldest culture on Earth. I felt pretty embarrassed about it. The silver lining for this experience though was that I got to witness first-hand the power of music as a universal language."
