Introducing Odette and her stunning debut single, Watch Me Read You
We've got a special new artist on our hands Australia.
It's rare enough for any old single to stop you in your tracks, but when it's someone's debut release - that's even more special. Enter 19-year-old singer/songwriter Odette, fresh out of Sydney's inner west and already signed (at 17 mind) to EMI Music. Last Friday saw the release of her debut single, Watch Me Read You, and let us tell you we definitely gave it a few rinses over the weekend. Upon hearing it we just had to know more, so we sent her a few questions in an effort to get in at the ground level for an artist with big things on the horizon:
Tell us about about yourself?
Hello I’m Odette! I’m a songwriter based in Sydney. I fell absolutely in love with writing music when I was eight and haven’t stopped writing since - poetry, stories, music. I also enjoy eating delicious cake.
What kinda tunes we talkin’?
My songs are all based around the lyrics and written on piano - it’s all about telling the story or communicating a certain emotion. It’s not all necessarily written for piano though; I do like to incorporate other elements, like strings or weird sounds, into my music. I’d say I definitely have pop and alternative influences.
Production/writing process:
In all honesty I don’t really have a process. Sometimes it comes out chronologically and I write a song from start to finish, other times it’ll be jumbled up. Sometimes I write on piano, other times I’m at work filling my workspace with bits of paper covered in words I won’t be able to read later. It’s kind of a lucky draw I guess, I never know what I’m going to get until I actually start writing.
Can you tell us about your new single, Watch Me Read You?
I wrote Watch Me Read You in January 2016 during a really intense time in my life, so it's deeply personal. I was in this state where I was super aware of everything around me so I guess this song is a way of not only processing my experiences but expressing how my understanding of the world around me was shifting, how my understanding of people and time, and even love, was changing.
Any shows coming up?
I do have some shows coming up! I’m playing BIGSOUND Festival on the 5th and 6th of September and I’m also at the Lansdowne in Sydney October 3.
What’s the rest of the year have in store?
The rest of the year I’d say is going to include some more shows from me, of course I’m going to keep writing but I have heaps of content so hopefully soon you guys can hear some of it!
Where can we hear more of your music?
Oh lots more to come I hope…pretty soon hopefully!
