Austen pauses her current TKST tour support to release lush new single, Storm

We also interviewed the Brisbane-born, now Sydney-based singer/songwriter.

Way back in early 2016 we first discovered Austen and her debut single, Faded, and since then she's been slowly bubbling away, collaborating with all the right peeps in the lead-up to her latest effort, Storm. Since that first introduction, she's joined Kuren on stage at Splendour In The Grass, supported artists such as Just A Gent, Running Touch and Nicole Millar, and is currently touring the country with The Kite String Tangle. We never had the chance to interview her back then, so flung her a few questions to find out what's up - check 'em out below after you've listened to Storm.

Tell us about about yourself?

I’m a singer/songwriter out of Brisbane now living in Sydney. Austen was born because I can never not write music and I needed somewhere for it to live.

What kinda tunes we talkin’?

Electro-infused alternative pop, surreal, honest, dreamy and dancey.

Production/writing process:

Everything starts acoustically on guitar, a line or two by themselves and a burning idea I need to get across. It’s like a race to get it all out in a cool way before your mind moves on to the next thing. The process always involves a lot of iPhone voice memos. Then working with someone on production to get the atmosphere of the song match what’s in my head.

Can you tell us about your new single, Storm?

Storm is a dark, vibey alt-pop tune I wrote about the kind of tangled intensity of first falling for someone. It’s just crazy, chill and beautiful all at once. It seems simple – that’s how the song feels to me. Musically, it’s me embracing pop and trap influences that I have and also keeping the core instruments - mostly the guitar - that were there in the first stages. Having Storm in my sets for this tour has left me on such a ridiculous high every night, seeing the way people vibe to the song is incredible.

Any shows coming up?

I’m on tour supporting The Kite String Tangle this month w/ Golden Vessel:

Wed 25 Oct - The Corner Hotel, Melbourne

Fri 27 Oct - The Corner Hotel, Melbourne

Sat 28 Oct - Jack Rabbit Slim's, Perth

Sun 29 Oct - Jack Rabbit Slim's, Perth

What’s the rest of the year have in store?

Touring Australia with TKST, writing my EP, working on visuals for my live set and buying my Mum a puppy.

Where can we hear more of your music?

WEBSITE, SPOTIFY, SOUNDCLOUD.
