West Aussie indie synth-enthusiasts take us through their electric and eclectic new EP

Almost exactly one year on from their celebrated second album Moonbow (that we found out all about here), synth-loving West Aussie indie-pop four-piece Death By Denim are ready to make you dance on new EP My House Is A Club.

Taking things in a slightly different direction to their past records, DBD recorded their new EP during their most intensive studio sessions to date that saw them draw inspiration from artists as diverse as the Weeknd, Harry Styles, Tood Terje, Foals, Outkast and many more. The result is an eclectic yet cohesive body of work that channels the vibes conjured by its title, in turn making your own house a club in the process.

DBD reflect on the creation of My House Is A Club, saying “With the past albums we were recording 3-4 songs at a time over many months, which can be confusing when you have The Weeknd on repeat in January and the Beatles in March. We were on the search for new sounds we had never encountered before and were determined to experiment as much as possible to find them, including a wall of 8 synthesisers, a new drum kit and a fresh range of effects pedals to play with at Debaser Studio, headed up by sound extraordinaire Andy Lawson.”

To dive even deeper into their new release, the DBD fellas have taken us through the EP, track by track - have a listen and get to know below!

MY HOUSE IS A CLUB

Fun yet frantic, My House is a Club is a supercharged anthem that dances around a sad subject. The lyric is inspired by the inescapable chaos of living in a derelict share house frequently transformed into a non-stop party destination. The constant highs being matched by continuous lows, and the portrayal of a vibrant popular life on social media masking a lonely search for deeper connection in reality.

DRAPED IN VAPOUR

The adventures that unfold when meeting new friends in the smokers’ section at your local are no longer shrouded in thick cigarette smog. They are engulfed in the colourful fruit scented mist of a vape.

Draped in Vapour is a dive into the sensory plain, a late 90s/early 2000s smooth RnB inspired groove that gallops and trots through arpeggiated melodies - breathing a new dynamic into a familiar sound explored in previous DBD tracks such as Wiggy and Out of Habit.

MAGIC DAISY

We often joke that this is the song that would be created if Arctic Monkeys sat down with the Bee Gees, the Weeknd and Kylie Minogue. Nik continues to discover the power of his higher range not unlike a young Barry Gibb circa 1975.

Magic Daisy is a fusion of our fuzzy sun-soaked rock n roll with rhythmic sequencers, percussion and wavy synths that pushes the DBD sound into a more dancey, almost disco direction - with equal parts raw and electronic driving the track.

HOPE WE DON’T FALL IN LOVE

Jumping right into the synth-dance direction on the EP, this song is about being afraid of new love when you are still attached to a past relationship. Latching on to the hope that things will return to how they used to be and not wanting to move forward with a recent connection you are constantly pulled towards that you feel could close the book on the past. The fun we had on remixing our own songs before recording the new EP definitely paved the way for this more rhythmic electronic groove.

CRUEL

It's about losing touch with someone you are seeing. They've changed and it's scary, you find they are going to different clubs and hanging around different people. You want it to be like before but you know that won't happen and you are coming to terms with it. This song completely transformed in the studio from a bouncy pop-rock dance track into a dark and windy number that is more in line with the spirit of the lyrics.
