Premiere: EGOISM kick off their 2020 with new single YOU YOU

The Sydney duo make it four-from-four with their new single, which arrives with the promise of an EP to come.

Since capturing our attention with their 2018 single Sorry, Sydney duo EGOISM have grown to become national treasures of Australia's indie scene; their dreamy, alt-pop sound having grown and evolved with every tease they've delivered since. They're very much three-from-three at this point; Scout and Olive's dueting vocals and shimmering shoegaze-pop consistently amongst the country's best - something they've proved with Sorry and last year's double punch with Enemies and What Are We Doing?. The latter particularly has to be amongst the best songs of 2019, especially on a local level.

In 2020, it appears that they're not slowing down. After capturing an audience and showcasing their consistency as a duo in 2019, they're doubling down to ensure that this year's going to be their biggest yet - a natural trajectory, considering their achievements so far, but one they definitely want to cement into place. Their first single of the year YOU YOU - premiering on Pilerats today ahead of its full release this Friday - is a song that's going to help them on their ways, premiering the track today ahead of a national tour with another band to watch in 2020, Pinkish Blu, and the promise of an EP's arrival before the year's end. It's all happening in EGOISM's camp.

YOU YOU is a delightful dream-pop song that almost sounds like credits theme for a teen rom-com; a blend of guitar and subtle percussion forming the perfect backing for EGOISM's two members - Scout Eastment and Olive Rush - to showcase their strength in both vocals and songwriting, with Scout's vocal largely leading the charge as a flurry of guitar erupts underneath the track's anthemic choruses. Olive joins in later on as Scout's vocal enters the background - the hazy echo of Olive's vocal almost feeling like a small choir of voices, not just one - as they sing about the toxicity of relationships; each of the members dissecting their experiences as they exchange vocal parts.

"There was someone in my life causing me a lot of pain and I wrote this when I was finally trying to get away," says Scout on the single. "It's crazy how hard it is to let go, especially when you still really care for the other person. I kind of find it hard to leave anything and not feel responsible. Olive was going through something really similar at the time, so we were able to really come together and help each other through writing this song."

As mentioned, the song arrives ahead of a national tour with Pinkish Blu, the rising Adelaide-based outfit who have - much like EGOISM - emerged a frontrunner of Australian pop's next generation, and how it can be twisted and warped with experimentation to blossom into something entirely new and exciting. Then, there's also news of EGOISM's new EP On Our Minds, set to arrive later this year with YOU YOU being the first taste.

In the meantime, however, dive into YOU YOU below, and grab those tour dates underneath:
