Premiere: EGOISM tackle mental health in new single, Enemies

The Sydney duo continues to shine with their first single for 2019, Enemies.

Sydney indie-rock duo EGOISM are band we're hearing more and more of lately, with their 2017 debut EP It's Wearing Off introducing them as an act marrying bright pop-centric songwriting with riveting indie guitar melodies and this soft, shoegaze-esque haze, finding that meeting point between acts like shoegaze-pop break-out Hatchie and this new era of captivating indie bands à la Moaning Lisa and Body Type. It's a combination that works, with the band winning us over time and time again, like on last year's Pilerats-premiered Sorry, which we called a "track that reaches for the stars and shoots way past them." Their new one, Enemies, is no different, uniting a catchy vocal line and these shimmering, bright guitar melodies for a single that oozes with this care-free summery feeling, as well as their signature, DIY shading which comes through the single's hazy guitar melodies.

As the band explains, those catchy, featherweight lyrics offer something a little more meaningful, with its lyrics talking on communication, mental health, and finding help when it comes to overcoming those inner-struggles. "Enemies is really just about mental health and how it can affect the people you love," the band's Olive Rush explains. "We're both people that have never had anyone we'd describe as an "enemy"; I think we're both too busy criticising ourselves and worrying about what the hell we're doing with our lives. But when it gets to the point that those thoughts are driving us away from each other, it ends up feeling like the real enemy is inside you. So this song is about desperately communicating all those thoughts to each other." It's a brilliant single with an essential meaning to match, putting EGOISM forward as a duo that seemingly keep getting better and better with every release.
