Introducing: Helen Shanahan

Introducing: Helen Shanahan

A WA songstress who's just recorded her debut album in Nashville.

WA-based solo artist Helen Shanahan recently released a stirring new single in I Only Hide, a moving examination of anxiety, one that had us seeking to know more about the artist as she celebrates the single's release with a few shows. Take a read below and find out a little more about Shanahan, and check those show dates towards the bottom:

Tell us about about yourself?

My name is Helen and I’m a 28 year old singer/songwriter from Perth, WA! I perform around Perth regularly and have recently been in Nashville where I recorded my debut album.

What kinda tunes we talkin’?

Folky/acoustic/heartfelt songs with memorable melodies!

Production/writing process:

I tend to write a lot in solitude; I feel self-conscious when I know someone is home listening to me! I find it very therapeutic; it’s something I can turn to when I’m feeling stressed and worried. Production wise, I have had some great experiences with producers such as Pip Norman and Brad Jones (Missy Higgins), as they are able take my simple guitar/voice and add their vision to it!

What do you do outside of music?

I teach singing and guitar (which is pretty much still music!), I am a movie and book lover, I love to bake sweet treats and also take my dog Toby for some leisurely strolls around the park. I lead a very ‘rock star’ life style!

Can you tell us about your latest single, I Only Hide?

The song was recorded in Nashville with producer Brad Jones (Missy Higgins, Melody Pool). It focuses on the struggle of wanting to perform, but also being a highly nervous person and being afraid of putting yourself out there for fear of being judged. I think it’s a common battle artists face!

Any shows coming up?

March 4, Perth International Arts Festival / March 24, The Boston, Perth / March 31 & April 1, Joondalup Festival.

What’s the rest of the year have in store?

I am planning to release my debut album (which the single is taken from) on May 5, and then do lots of performing to promote the release.

Where can we hear more of your music?

WEBSITE, YOUTUBE, SOUNDCLOUD and TRIPLE J UNEARTHED.
