Watch: Kamal - better

Watch: Kamal - better

The young artist has graduated school and is making 2022 a year of new releases, his latest giving a blissful taste to his depth as a storyteller and ear for melody as a songwriter.

Hailing from North West London, Kamal is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has had a huge couple of years since his debut in 2019. Releasing his debut EP war outside (which we talk more on here) last year, the now 19 year old artist has been nomination for the Ivor Novello-award, received co-signs from the likes of NME, British GQ, British Vogue, i-D, Dazed, and recently appeared in Converse’s #createnext campaign. Today he’s back with his second offering for this year, an intimate pop track that follows on from the previous single nowhere to hide, pulling elements of indie and hip-hop into a well polished ear-worm of a release titled better.

Accompanied by a video clip directed by LOOSE that follows Kamal and his friends driving through the stunning terrain of Kazakhstan, better is a blissful release that strips right back to gentle guitar rhythms, building to sonic bass booms, chilled-out beats, and atmospheric synths. The well arranged builds and precise layering of instrumentation allows Kamal’s honest storytelling and smooth effortless melodies to cut through, as he narrates his observations on a romantic relationship, and all the optimistic yet vulnerable feelings that accompany the adrenaline rush of a new love.

Now that Kamal has graduated school he is planning on placing his primary focus on recording, making 2022 a year of new releases. Be sure to get across this rising star and enjoy the beauty that better has to offer below.

Kamal’s new single Better is out now via Neighbourhood Recordings / Virgin Music Australia.
