Premiere: NZ's Theia and NYC's Sean Turk unite for 1Night

The bright and upbeat pop track isn't the first time they've come together, but it may be their best.

Over the last two years particularly, we've become fascinated by a quickly-blossoming pop movement through Australia and New Zealand, with artists including Vera Blue, Sam Bluer, BENEE and others quickly becoming personal favourites thanks to their unique, distinct approaches to the often-criticised genre. Australasian (she splits her time in Auckland and Sydney) popstar-on-the-rise Theia is an act we've definitely placed within this bracket of boundary-pushing pop, whether it be introducing her as the next big thing out of New Zealand a few years ago, or on her striking and experimental-driven second EP Not Your Princess, which further introduced us to the confident queen in the making.

New York-based musician Sean Turk has been a big part of this rise, remixing Theia's 2017 break-out Treat You to capture her attention that, eventually, lead to them teaming up for Bad Idea last year, with Sean on production duties. Now, they're back together once again, with a quick-firing collaboration that sees them make a pop-duet of kinds, taking a classic and somewhat over-done take on pop music and pushing it into a new direction. Above a striking production laden with bubbly synth stabs and clicks, Sean and Theia exchange verses, creating a call-and-response-type track that highlights both their strengths - Sean's production and the smooth R&B twang to his vocal, and Theia's confident and tall-standing vocal stride. "It’s been really fun working on this collaboration with Sean. I’ve worked with him on several projects now and I feel that we’ve got a creative understanding," she says on the track. "We wanted 1Night to be a warm and nostalgic song - something you can dance to," she continues, and when you dive into the track below before its official release tomorrow, it's obvious that they've knocked this goal out of the park.
