Premiere: Perth pop one-to-watch Tash Marie makes a return with new single, MVP

After sharing her debut single back in 2019, the rising star eyes her return with a new single and a launch show this week.

Anyone familiar with the heights of Perth's pop music next generation would likely have come across Tash Marie back in 2019. Released at the tail-end of the year, her debut single Before I'm Gone was a moment that felt like the entrance of one to watch; a moment bursting with the talents and prowess of one of West Australia's most exciting and promising new additions, which would later be solidified by a show or two in the year since.

Since then, however, Tash Marie has been caught up in the rollercoastering highs and lows everyone else has experienced over the last 18 months or so, with the pandemic placing her popstar trajectory on hold. Nevertheless, music was written, and today - a whole year and a half later - we're proud to welcome her return in the form of MVP, a long-awaited sophomore single that proves Tash Marie's debut wasn't just some one-off fluke, never to be repeated again.

On the surface level, MVP solidifies Tash Marie's presence amongst West Australia's blossoming upper echelon, re-igniting the charm and charisma from her debut single while also showing how her songwriting has evolved over the break. It's three minutes of swaying, low-key pop mixed with flutterings of indie and R&B; the end result taking the indulgence of someone like Kali Uchis or Wafia and uniting it with flicking guitar and stripped-back percussion, in an evolution of the sound that she initially debuted through Before I'm Gone.

Thematically, MVP was one of the songs born from the 20-year-old's down-time, spurred after obtaining MVP status in Valorant - a first-person shooter game introduced to her via her boyfriend. Throw in a couple of Tash Marie's signature isms and a hazy mix of genres and sounds, and you have another slice of aching, near-perfect pop music from Tash Marie, who after a little while of quietness, comes back with something brilliantly new.

Premiering on Pilerats today, the new single arrives ahead of a launch show at The Bird on July 14th, supported by Princess Khanya, Gloss, and Anesu. You can find more information on the show here, but otherwise, take a dive into MVP below - and let's hope Tash Marie's next single isn't as far off.
