Premiere: Pop break-out Jakøb unveils his first song for 2021, Make The Money

After a trio of singles throughout 2020, the Sydney pop artist continues to soar with another taste of what's next.

Sydney-based pop musician Jakøb is someone we've been keeping a close eye on over the last few years, but how could you not? He's blossomed into one of the most exciting and promising voices of homegrown pop's next-generation, capturing the talent and prowess within this next-up cohort through exciting bursts of alt-pop and indie-pop; think something along the lines of Rex Orange County and Omar Apollo meets a touch of BENEE or Troye Sivan, for example.

As such, Jakøb has been someone on our ones-to-watch list for a while now. In 2019, everything came together for a brilliant self-titled debut EP, one that captured his pop spirit while also showcasing how he warps and bends the genre into the new directions, intertwining it with shadings of alt, indie, R&B and even Latin-inspired sounds. Then, throughout singles last year, he showcased how he's building upon that and moving forwards; each song showing different facets of the musician's intimate but soaring songwriting style.

Now, he kicks off 2021 in the same way, edging closer to his break-out moment with the help of his first single for the year, Make The Money. It's an anthemic and somewhat empowering return from Jakøb, which danced with this kind-of funky/disco-like dance-pop feel, brought to life in the studio with the aid of producers Bread n' Butter. His bright-eyed hooks are still front and centre, but they feel a little more energised this time around, keeping up with the liveliness of the production that moved underneath it.

Lyrically, the song continues Jakøb's trend of capturing the thoughts and feelings of his generation, exploring different facets of their multi-dimensional lives and everything that may encompass. "Make The Money was written by myself and friends Bread N Butter who I wrote Stuck In My Ways with," he explains on the single's creation, before getting into the dirt about what the song is about:

"When going in to write the song, I wanted to give my take and expand on a relatable topic to myself and many money. As I’m entering my 20’s I’m starting to see life change where I don’t have the chance or the availability to go out as much, see my friends or do fun things. Having to make money has become the focus in this new chapter I’m currently living."

The song is out far and wide this Friday February 12th, but until then, you can take a dive into Make The Money below, as it premieres on Pilerats a few days early:
