Photo Diary: BTS of The Pinheads' latest film clip with Director/Drummer James Kates
They've just announced a huge Aussie tour kicking off in February 2019.

After a few bandmembers took a much needed break in recent times, The Pinheads have returned with a ripping new single to round out 2018 - Not Like You. A timely discussion on our increasingly "connected" world that seems to only be leading to more isolation and anxiety, the scuzzy 3-minute jam also comes with a rad video clip directed by the group's drummer, James Kates.
Ahead of a big run of shows around the country early next year, we copped a few photos from Jake Ollett and hit up Keats to find out a little more about his aspirations as a filmmaker. Check it out along with the full run of dates, below:
You make all The Pinheads clips, what got you started in film/directing music videos?
Most of them by default and generally very last minute. Ha. I started shooting bodyboarding vids in my teens and that naturally evolved into music videos also when I started making tunes.
Where did the inspo for this latest clip come from?
No direct inspo really. I recently purchased a decent projector for a hot price off Gumtree. I’d been curious on experimenting with projections for a while now. It’s bit of an old hat technique and I thought I could breath some new life into it. It was a curious scene, a group of Pins lugging all this shit around to some iconic spots around home and projected ourselves onto them. Ha!
What are some of your favourite music video clips?
November Rain ha. Nah, I guess people who can nail a vision on no budget and make it compliment the song is always inspiring. I can’t really think of too many recent stand outs. Kirin J’s Big Enough springs to mind but that’s pretty ridiculous. At the moment I’m a sucker for earnest Aussie classics like Chisel's - Forever Now or Paul Kelly’s - Before Too Long.
Is being in the band helpful or a hinderance when it comes to make a video clip?
Both - I guess understanding the direction of the band is helpful and it’s easy for everyone express their 2 cents without it being too weird but it can also lead to some sour thoughts when there’s too many chefs.
Let's say budget is no issue, what's your dream video clip?
Hypotheticals eh. It fully depends on the song hey. Something involving space/time travel or a multi sensory experience like smell-e-vision. Surely that exists by now?
