Say G'Day to Jacob Diamond and his unassumingly brilliant new single, Docks

The WA-based artist will be hitting the road soon to a city near you.

Following up his recently released Um EP, one of Perth's favourite sons, Jacob Diamond, has already backed it up with a cracking new single in Docks. Not only that, but the alt/folk/pop artist has announced a six-date national tour to celebrate its release this coming June. At those shows you can expect to hear tunes old and new, especially given Docks is the first taste of his upcoming debut full-length. We hit up Jake with a few questions to find out a little more:

Tell us about about yourself?

Wellll, I’m a 23-year-old singer/songwriter from Perth. I’m like maybe 5 10”? I’ve always been pretty interested in and focused on singing and songs so I’ve made moves over the last six or seven years to make those things my job. Therefore, v poor, mostly confused but obvs can’t complain. Very into birds  atm, too

What kinda music are we talking?

I tentatively say alt-folk but can’t help but dry retch, so instead I sometimes say ‘alt-folk mess slash euphonious-ness’ because of the rhyme. Growing up, I spent a lot of time with The Beatles and a lot of time with musicals and a lot of time with jazz, so my songs have echoes of those things sometimes.

Production/writing process:

The songs on this record were written by me over the last three or four years, mostly about the changing of a way of life. I would bring a song that I considered to be ‘finished’ to my producer and buddy, Lachlan Carrick (Gotye, Ainslie Wills, Gretta Ray) who would basically tell me to go home and have a good long hard look at myself in the mirror and think about what I’d done. Jks, he’s no villain, he’s just amazing at focusing my efforts into better places. We clarified, re-structured, and re-wrote until we were re-happy.

Can you tell us about your new single, Docks?

Docks is a ‘mini-crisis’ song I wrote at a time when I was just beginning to feel uncomfortable in my life’s environments and unsure about what I even thought was important. Not exactly new territory for a song, but “hey WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME I'M JUST A PERSON”. The song is built around a version of the actual moment when you’re like, “Oh man, is this.. is this fucked?”

What’s the rest of the year have in store?

There’s another single (plus vid!) from my debut record on the way and the release of the record itself. I’m playing a bunch more shows around the country, too, starting with heading over to the east coast during the Docks tour. Finally and perhaps most importantly, I’m v keen to see Aladdin on stage again.

Where can we hear more of your music?
