Shygirl shares SOPHIE-produced new single SLIME, announces new ALIAS EP
Following on from the high-octane FREAK earlier in the year, the UK rapper will share her new EP on November 20th.
We said it with the release of FREAK a minute ago, but just to reiterate: there's no-one quite like Shygirl in hip-hop. The London-based rapper has turned into one of rap's most adventurous and left-field stars, whether it be through her work as a keen guest collaborator alongside Arca and GEORGIA or in her solo work, through the material that's littered her last few years. She's someone that sits in a unique lane, pairing the abrasiveness of dance music's underground with her slick vocals that are amongst the only ones in the world that could keep up with her productions' quick-firing pace; the final result being this darting, club-rap sound that's undoubtedly the future.
It's something that's really shown in the last 18 months or so particularly. Last year, she released a trio of singles that felt like a step up in their own distinctive ways that showed her versatility amongst different pockets of this club-rap niche - just look at the contrast between the screaming UCKERS and fiery BB - and this year she's doubled down on it; FREAK - released back at the start of September - being a peak in Shygirl's career thus far, with an edged production by Sega Bodega rushing amongst moans and snappy lyricism that feels like Shygirl living her best life.
Now, she's eyeing the next step, bouncing off the success of FREAK last month to announce the release of new EP titled ALIAS - scheduled for release November 20th - and to announce a star-packed new single SLIME, which sees her come together with three heavyweights of the club music world: her constant collaborator Sega Bodega, as well as SOPHIE (!) and Kai Whiston.
It's another dark-lit extension into this sexual club-rap sound; one that feels almost like a further step into this empowering sexual embrace that's fuelled much of Shygirl's recent work ("She tore it look at that slime / That silk smooth dirty whinе / Every inch she moves what's minе (Yup yup) / She's for the streets bitch (And that's fine)," she raps). Pair that with the oozing production underneath, and SLIME feels like quintessential Shygirl - dirty, fiery and a whole lot of fun.
ALIAS is out on November 20th via Because Music / Caroline Australia - pre-order it here - but in the meantime, take a dive into SLIME and its lyric video below, which features cameos from SOPHIE, Arca, Kelsey Lu and more.
