Premiere: Get a dose of midweek disco as Mell Hall remixes Torren Foot's More Life

The stand-out house track gets a disco-funk new wind from promising rising star Mell Hall, who's proved somewhat unstoppable throughout the last year.

Even though club shut-downs mean dance music hasn't had the space to thrive where it belongs for much of the last twelve months, it doesn't mean that it's been completely dead either. 2020 was a big year for dance music thanks to big names delivering stand-out new records (Disclosure, Baauer, Golden Features and ODESZA's BRONSON project) and rising newcomers alike; the latter half of the equation proving particularly exciting for Australia's club culture as it eyes down a next generation that aims to be just as brilliant as the last.

Some of 2020's biggest dance music hits came from Australia, many of which from artists that have pushed and pushed over the last few years to find their success only recently. Take Stace Cadet and KLP's monster collaboration Energy for example, or the runaway success of acts like Dom Dolla, who has continued to rise and rise throughout 2020. Torren Foot is another; his song More Life dropped right at the tail-end of 2019 but found somewhat of a break-out moment in 2020, even without the strobe-lit clubs it's destined to dominate (largely thanks to a new edit of the song featuring Tinie Tempah and L Devine).

Now, a whole year-something later, the masterful track lives on through the eyes of Mell Hall, a rising Melbourne club champion who proved one of 2020's most exciting names in dance music thanks to her crafty spin on disco and funk music. Mell Hall's disco-funk rush is something that seemed to thrive amongst remixes spread across 2020, and now pushes forward into 2021 thanks to a remix of Torren Foot's More Life.

The remix is really something else, taking the low-slung house of the original - as well as its brilliant, L Devine-sung hook - and transforming it into that relishes with its sun-soaked funk pace, while keeping that same 'oomph' factor as you get from the original. Throw a couple of whistles and cheers in there and Mell Hall's More Life remix reeks of celebration, not just in itself, but also a suggestion of the strength of homegrown club music to come in future years.

"More Life has become such an iconic record, ever since I first heard the promo I knew this was gonna be a big one for Torren," she says on the single. "When I was asked to add my Disco/Funk rub to the track it was an immediate YES! With dance floors back open in 2021 I can’t wait to see how this remix goes down!"

It's no doubt going to go down a treat, and you can listen to it below, as it premieres on Pilerats ahead of its official release this Friday, January 29th.
