Premiere: HyperFlora are ones to watch with debut single, Greta Oto feat. Rahel
The genre-blurring electronic/indie/hip-hop group reveal a debut single to be excited about.
It's hard to make a serious impression with a debut single, but enter right of frame HyperFlora, who seemingly have broken this trend by bursting out the gates with their first proper venture into releasing music, Greta Oto. Composed of Johnny Polhe and Josh Yardy, HyperFlora are a genre-melting Melbourne duo who spotlight strong production and songwriting skills learnt through years of honing their respective crafts, bringing their individual strengths together in 2018 with Greta Oto being the first taste of what to expect from their indie-electronic-hip-hop-infused sound.
Greta Oto is a single that places their forward-thinking experimentalism in the forefront, breaking free from any suggestion of a 'box' to be confined in as they bring a distinctly electronic sound together with touches of indie and R&B, the latter of which particularly coming through Billy Davis collaborator Rahel, who adds a shimmering top-line above the single's bustling production. At times, the single becomes quite thickly-layered and almost maximalist, but each layer - each melody - is intricately placed so they all fall together perfectly, signalling their evolution as a production pairing bound to flourish in the future. "A ‘Greta Oto’ is a butterfly with transparent wings," says the duo on the single and its meaning. "Creating this track we had this idea of using both the transparency and the butterfly itself as a metaphor. The track is a message to ourselves reminding us to stay transparent with the true essence of who we are. 'Let your light shine'. If we remove the bad parts of our ego we transform into the best version of ourselves just like a butterfly's metamorphosis."
It signals the arrival of a new force to our already-bustling electronic scene, and with a whole heap planned, introduce yourself to HyperFlora and their new single below:
