Nina Las Vegas highlights some artists to watch from the Heaps Decent crop

Diplo, Levins and Nina's Heaps Decent turns 10 this year.

This year the not-for-profit organisation set up by Nina Las Vegas, Diplo and DJ Levins working with young people and emerging artists from marginalised and disadvantaged communities, providing a means by which they can tell their story in their own way.

To mark the occasion, along with an upcoming Q&A Session between Nina and Diplo this coming Sunday (full details down the bottom), Nina sent us a few highlight artists/tracks to come out of the Heaps Decent stable:

Words by Nina Las Vegas:

Throughout the past 10 years, Heaps Decent workshops have resulted in thousands of songs written over thousands of new beats, across tens of thousands of kilometres. Aside from the programs run in regional and remote communities across Australia and within Juvenile Justice Centres in NSW and ACT, our weekly workshops result in a large amount of finished material. Our 'Home Base’ workshop is every Monday night in Redfern and involves the making of high quality music with talented emerging artists from all over Sydney. Every part of the process is worked on; songwriting, beatmaking, recording and even things like social media management and creating music videos all take place as part of the Home Base workshop.

RAVIN

Hailing from Sydney’s south west, Ravin is a rapper who’s been working with Heaps Decent at Home Base for the past four years. Throughout a number of releases with Heaps Decent, he tells the stories of his childhood. He’s very lyrically minded with incredibly intelligent content. You can also hear him on Unearthed and as of last week, on triple j!

ATA

Also coming from Home Base, ATA embraces his Turkish culture and language in his music. Born in Sydney of Turkish heritage, ATA's intricate songs explore stories surrounding his life experiences as a first generation Australian. Oh, and he’s only 18!

TASHA LEE MARSHALL

A singer/songwriter from NSW's Central Coast who creates beautiful vocal melodies and backs it up with some mean guitar playing. She’s always busy working on furthering her music career.

RA$$EL COOL

An Inner West rapper whose flow is straight out of 90s New York, but whose lyrical content and themes are all about today. We’ve known him forever and so proud of his tracks and clips and the hard work he’s put in over the years.

MIGHTY MERVE

Mighty Merve is a 20-year-old youth worker out of Griffith. He can write, rap and sing like a pro! He’s got a super smooth vibe and isn’t a stranger to the stage, having supported acts like Seth Sentry when they reach the Riverina!
