Listen to a dark and abrasive new banger from SOPHIE, Ponyboy

A massive switch-up from the more tender pop sounds we heard on It's Okay To Cry.

After surprising us with the stripped-back and tender pop ballad It's Okay To Cry a few months ago, enigmatic British producer SOPHIE has had us all on the palm of her hands. Now pushed into the spotlight on her own terms (and not through production credits for Madonna, Charli XCX and others), the typically quiet musician has seemingly evolved into a far more transparent and visible figure, something further cemented with the debut of her new live show at a Red Bull Music Academy event in Los Angeles, packed full of new music. One of these unreleased singles was Ponyboy, a dark and abrasive return to the SOPHIE sounds teased on tracks like MSMSMSM, sounds that contrast the lighter SOPHIE tones on It's Okay To Cry perfectly. Arriving with a video filmed prior to the show, Ponyboy sports a vigorous and heaving production, which crunches with distorted bass and percussion alongside chanting vocals.

The film clip is based on a dance routine replicated in SOPHIE's new live show, in which SOPHIE and performance duo FlucT dance around in an almost possessed-like state. Check out the video clip below:
