Ah, time. A constant variable that definitely does not feel constant the older you get, with each passing year stacking up and making each subsequent trip round the sun feel shorter and shorter. What does this have to do with alt-rock trio Cannon? Well, I had “one of those” moments upon seeing that their debut EP, the acclaimed Hardwood Hits featuring stand out single Hell came out nearly 20 years ago in 2005… I swear it was only 10 years ago?!

A staple on the live scene and known for their engaging shows, Cannon have toured Australia and supported some big names like The Black Keys, Tenacious D, JET, You Am I and many more. They’ve also been steadily in the studio, releasing their last album Connexion in 2021. Now the band are gearing up for their next album, having recently released the single Lithium Springs and this week following up with the record’s title track, Comet’s Coming, premiering on Pilerats today.

A funky cut that builds from groove laden verses to big, hook filled choruses, Comet’s Coming pairs staccato guitars with overdriven bass and a steady backbeat, while vocalist Mitchy McIovr’s pre-apocalyptic themed lyrics were inspired by the novel Voss by British-born Australian fiction writer Patrick White. In the novel the central protagonist Voss, through his epical, troubled voyage across the Australian continent ultimately accepts his destiny. McIvor suggests, “it’s a fatalist song about the acceptance of mortality”.

Alongside the new single comes an awesome animated music video that features a lone protagonist who unwittingly unleashes the titular comet into the sky. Utilising stop motion animation, McIovr explained "The animated video for Comet’s Coming features hundreds of drawings sequenced together to create Cannon’s ominous, dystopian journey. The video is by @creepstreeps."
