Today sees the release of Gold Coast artist San Mei's sophomore EP, Heaven, and what a delight it is. Four indie-rock charmers filled with fuzzy guitars, catchy af melodies, thumping drums and of course San Mei's silky smooth - at times soaring - vocals, it caps off a busy year for the emerging star.

Linking up with revered production mastermind Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy, Ali Barter), she recorded it over a few months between Brisbane and Melbourne, revelling working with one of our country's most loved engineers: "[Oscar and I] hit it off straight away and it seemed like he understood where I was coming from, even when I had trouble conveying certain ideas in the demos I made at home."

She's got a huge run of shows supporting Holy Holy coming up, and before you head down nice and early to one (full list at the bottom), get a little background info on the EP from San Mei below:

WONDER

There isn’t too much mystery behind Wonder – it’s about that classic ‘butterflies’ moment you get when someone unknown to you captures your attention, and you’re not sure why. It’s that person becoming a daydream to you, wondering who they are, what they’re about, and not necessarily wanting them to become anything more than some intoxicating illusion.

SHADOWS

This song is about a relationship that has come to an end but hasn't completely resolved; where two people have faded into 'shadows' of what they were to one another, becoming distant and fading. But there's still hope in 'what if'. What if you tried harder, what if I could make up my mind, what if we just made it happen? It's not meant to be an entirely sad or hopeless song - it kind of has this crescendo towards the end where there's a sense of hope and possibility and you can feel it taking a turn towards these two people finding one another again.

TWO PLANETS

This song is about that dizzy, magic place you're in with someone, where it feels like you're the only two people in the universe, almost like you're spinning together in outer space. It's that surreal feeling of almost being out of control, but being drawn together by that exciting feeling of new love.

HEAVEN

This song is about when love is blind and it feels like heaven, but if you step back you can see things for what they really are. It’s about waking up to reality and letting go of something that’s going to end up causing harm, even if at first it felt like a dream.
