Video Premiere: Joel Leggett - Losing My Mind

Darkinjung/Central Coast-based singer-songwriter returns with a delightful new slice of indie folk ahead of national tour dates

Hailing from Darkinjung/Central Coast is indie-folk singer-songwriter Joel Leggett who is back with his stirring & uplifting new single Losing My Mind, out June 2, which alongside its pastoral music video is premiering on Pilerats today.

An instant ear worm of a track, Losing My Mind opens with gentle acoustic guitar, playful piano and rolling drums while Leggett's soothing vocals shine through, building to the song's sing-a-long inducing chorus, with a bit of banjo thrown in for good measure. Speaking on his new single, Legget explains:

"The track was recorded over two days and depicts a specific time in my life when I suffered from social anxiety due to the pandemic. Not being able to leave the boundaries of my home was almost impossible due to lockdowns and curfews. During and after the pandemic, I struggled with getting out and meeting people. Catching up with friends and being in large groups was hard because I had this mind chatter telling me I shouldn't be doing these things. I got so used to spending time with my own thoughts, and sometimes it felt uncomfortable. I felt stuck in my own home and stuck in my head; that is where this track came from."

Meanwhile, the music video takes the song's lyrics "I wish I'd go outside / maybe then I'd feel alright" quite literally, with Joel initially cooped up inside before heading out to the countryside with his six string in hand, jamming in fields and next to streams. Regarding the video, Leggett says "I thought dancing around paddocks and hanging out around freshwater streams would be a beautiful way to spend your day if you weren't stuck at home. Funnily enough, we also ran into Pete Murray while recording this; very inspiring!"

In support of the single, Joel will be playing a heap of shows around the country, including a few gigs supporting The Dreggs - see below for all dates, and give Losing My Mind a listen and watch a day ahead of release!
