Following-up a big 2023 that saw the release of three singles, as well as supporting Japanese rock ’n’ roll royalty Guitar Wolf on their sellout Australian & NZ tour, delightfully named Melbourne quartet GLOB are back and bigger than ever with their lively new single Moriarty. Out April 19, we’re stoked to be premiering Moriarty alongside its music video on Pilerats!
Opening with arpeggiated analog synths and mellow guitars, frontman Thomas James’ restrained vocals soon enter the mix as tension builds, before the rhythm section kicks in and further builds the energy and adds an undeniable groove. Featuring an interesting arrangement, Moriarty sees energy build and release several times throughout its four minutes before wrapping up with an explosive climax and mellow resolution, ending up how things began.
Speaking of explosive climaxes, not to be outdone the video manages to match the single’s energy as it alternates between roadtrip footage shot near Mparntwe/Alice Springs (keyboardist Lily’s hometown) on Arrernte Country and footage of the band jamming out and concluding with a full-blown firework finale.
Partially inspired by Jack Kerouac’s iconic On The Road, Thomas explains "‘Moriarty' was written after the passing of a friend. Named after Dean Moriarty, the free-spirited travel companion of Sal Paradise in Jack Kerouac’s ‘On the Road’, the concept for ‘Moriarty’ came about following a conversation with a mutual friend about the film adaptation of the novel and how better suited our friend would have been for the role of the maverick sidekick.
Also inspired by the expansive natural landscapes depicted in the novel, the music video (directed by Andre Sawenko) was partly filmed in the desert of Arrernte Country near Mparntwe/Alice Springs (keyboardist Lily's hometown) with the rest filmed in Naarm/Melbourne at Wick Studios."
With more singles (and eventually an LP!) on the horizon, 2024 is shaping up to be an exciting year for GLOB - take a first watch and listen of Moriarty as it premieres on Pilerats ahead of release:
