Meet Miss June, the New Zealand band quickly becoming globally adored
They'll be sharing their long-awaited debut album on September 6 via Frenchkiss Records.
While you may not be familiar with New Zealand-based rock outfit Miss June, they probably count one of your favourite rock acts a fan. Since their five-track, 2015-released debut EP Matriarchy, the Annabel Liddell-led four-piece have blossomed into favourites amongst the greater rock world, supporting everyone from the Foo Fighters to Wolf Alice; their music, strangely enough, the perfect accompanying support to both of these vastly different acts. On their work since, for example, their music has swerved between blistering rock and hazy post-punk, highlighting Annabel's soaring vocal which is skillful enough to navigate whatever instrumental it's working with - a feat that often, heavier bands find themselves tripping up on.
Their new single, Anomaly, is an ode to the beauty of flaws mixed within a quicker pace that makes it one of their more up-tempo pieces of work, with Annabel's vocal - once again - stealing the spotlight to be the single's big attraction. "I have an incredible ability to attract individuals that are as flawed as I am. It’s made my life chaotic and beautiful," she says on the track. "This song is about a girl. A girl I will never understand. A girl that’s a gun, a burning sun and an anomaly to me." Arriving following a two-side Best Girl / Twitch and it's follow-up, Enemies, Anomaly is a track that makes their forthcoming debut album, Bad Luck Party, one of rock's most anticipated and excitable, sure to sun and win us over with its release on September 6 via Frenchkiss Records.
Dive into Anomaly below, pre-order their debut album Bad Luck Party HERE, and catch them supporting Dune Rats on the east-coast next month, as well as a special one-off headline show at Sydney's The Vanguard on September 11th.
Tell us about yourself?
We are Miss June from Auckland New Zealand and we play music that is loud and fast. We are a quartet made up of Annabel Liddell (Vox, guitar), Jun Park (Guitar), Tom Leggett (Drums) and Chris Marshall (Bass).
What’s the vibe music-wise?
Describing your own sound is always hard I find. I guess we are a punk rock band and we just play music with lots of energy. Naturally, we like to write songs about subjects that are relevant to our lives and songwriting has always been such a good way to outlet your emotions and thoughts. There’s never a specific one theme or message that we write to.
What are your production and writing processes like?
When we write Annabel will usually bring a skeleton of a song that the band will fill up. Or we will all sit there and someone will come up with an idea that we all latch on to and explore it further until we come out with a product or section that we are happy with. To be honest it’s just a lot of bouncing ideas and almost like puzzle solving where we try to figure out the best way to piece together a song.
When producing, we will go into the studio and do a live drums session first. This is the best way to capture the energy of the drums which become the base layer of the songs. Then once all the drums are done we will slowly record the other instruments until we get a finished song that we are satisfied with. Pretty standard I think haha
Can you tell us about your latest single, Anomaly?
I have an incredible ability to attract individuals that are as flawed as I am. It’s made my life chaotic and beautiful. This song is about a girl. A girl I will never understand. A girl that’s a gun, a burning sun and an anomaly to me.
