Listen: Dolce Blue - The Finest
Perth four-piece flex out on new single of exploratory, psychedelic alt-pop
Just a few months on from their first release for the year, with Nothing Bad dropping back in June, Kalamunda’s finest alt-pop four-piece export Dolce Blue return in fine style with a new single of wistful-yet-uplifting sounds that is The Finest.
Opening with restrained strums and vocalist/lead guitarist Veronica Zurzolo’s honeyed vocals before giving way to a stripped back rhythm section, The Finest slowly building to the track’s addictive, hook-filled chorus. Managing to squeeze everything out of a three-and-a-half minute pop arrangement, The Finest’s second half gives way to a beatless breakdown before the surprise star of the show - a blistering solo that brings everything back to the chorus for a triumphant finish.
On the inspiration for The Finest, Zurzolo says “I really wish I could articulate my feelings properly, and this song is about me committing to do that with the people I care about and I know who care about me. It’s so easy to say “I’m fine”, because nobody wants to be overbearing or overshare, but The Finest is the first step, asking if it’s okay to tell you how I really am?”
In regards to how the track came together in the studio Veronica explains “We recorded the track with local legend Michael Strong and I think it really captures what we sound like, nothing overly complicated that you won’t hear when you see us live, it’s just a band in a room doing what they love. I also really enjoyed playing the lead guitar solo, and the reactions I get when I do it live.”
