Introducing: THE DROOLS

Introducing: THE DROOLS

Say hello to WA three-piece and scooter enthusiasts, The Drools.

Perth "indie blunge" outfit The Drools are playing their first show for a number of months this Saturday 1 October, so we took the opportunity to find a little bit more of what they're all about. Turns out there a bunch of mates, juggling uni degrees and pizza jobs with pumping out some top shelf grunge-rock. Learn yourself below, and get more info their show with Great Gable and Marmalade Mama HERE.

Tell us about about yourselves?

We are a three-piece blues grunge outfit from right here in little old Perth. Having all been school mates prior, we started jamming and now here we are. THE DROOLS is Ben on lead guitar and vocals, Tom on bass, and myself (Jake) on drums. The past year-and-a-half have seen us share the stage with Dune Rats, Love Junkies, Red Engine Caves, FOAM and a whole host of others and we were stoked to release our debut single Sullen Scenes in May, even getting a few cheeky spins on triple j Unearthed. Aside from that, we’re just three dudes who love our beers and live music.

What kinda tunes we talkin’?

Well we have been likened to many bands but I think indie blunge sounds pretty spot on, mashing together elements of indie rock, grunge and blues, or so I’ve been told. I think it boils down to our own individual influences with Ben adding his Silverchair and Frusciante-esque flair, Tom being the metal head, listening to the likes of Metallica, Lamb Of God and SOAD, and myself being swayed by Zeppelin, Mars Volta etc. It creates this kinda of contrasting but exciting end product that we all dig.

Writing process:

It's definitely a shared one, lately Ben’s been bringing some killer riffs, and me and tom work on that adding our own flavour to it, with lyrics more often than not, coming after. Inspiration for lyrics usually stems from Ben’s personal experiences, reflecting a certain mood that accompanies the instruments well and ties it all together. When writing new songs we aim to create something purely original that isn’t your conventional verse-chorus-verse-chorus rock tunes.

What does everyone do outside of THE DROOLS?

With Ben in between uni and pizza deliverer/coffee maker jobs, Tom being a full-time plumber/part-time erotic dancer, and myself just recently beginning to teach drums, we always find time to practice. I have just recently returned from a summer Euro trip so we have been out of action for the best part of four months. Otherwise you can find us watching gigs, Exports in hand.

Any shows coming up?

Jack Rabbit's on none other than Grand final day (Oct 1st)!! With supports from killer blokes Great Gable and rad mates Marmalade Mama, it's shaping up to be a large one. Just announced also on Oct 15th, we lose our Carine Tav V’s, supporting Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. Safe to say we're creaming at the thought of that one.

What’s the rest of the year have in store?

Without giving too much away, we may or may not have a EP launch date booked which means more tunes for your ears - so keep ‘em peeled.

Where can we hear more of your music?

All our music can be accessed through our SOUNDCLOUD and/or FACEBOOK.
