5 Things I've Learned at Pilerats with Austin (Our 15yo Work Experience Kid)
Because we like to live dangerously.
Hi my name is Austin, I’m 15 years old and I've been doing work experience with Pilerats for five months now. During that time I've learnt many things but these are my top 5:
Work can be fun
Most people don’t enjoy going to work but I find myself constantly counting down to the days I go in. It’s not just the work that makes it fun but everyone in the office just gives it a nice vibe that makes working so much nicer and easier.
After effects tutorials are possibly the most boring thing on earth
When Tay has nothing for me to do he tells me to watch Adobe After Effects tutorials. From this I have actually learnt nothing about After Effects other than how to make something to bounce when it appears which I use way too much now.
I learn more from coming here than school ever taught me
While school taught me the Pythagoras theorem, Pilerats taught me skills that I will use for the rest of my life. The first thing I learnt was to DJ which being a student is helpful for making some extra cash on the weekends, and second learnt how to make videos which I have now turned into a career path studying film at Tafe.
Facebook is a very important business tool
The first few times I came into Pilerats I wanted to make a good impression so I wouldn’t check my phone or Facebook. After a while I started looking around at everyones' computers and I seemed to always see someone on Facebook so it must be important for something, right?
Memes are first priority
I think for an office we spend a lot of time on the Internet and with the Internet you get memes. Then throw in an office full of people with a sense of humor you spend a lot of time making memes. It doesn’t matter if it’s a video of Tony Abbott saying "boats" over and over or an edit of Playschool making a bong... we all enjoy them.
Abbott's boat policyTONY ABBOAT.s/o Huff Post & and our work experience kid for making this today.
