Album of the Week: Fever Ray - Radical Romantics | 2023 Week 10

Karin Dreijer’s stunning new album is one of the most interesting and engaging records of the year so far + new records from Talib Kweli & Madlib, Sleaford Mods, Manchester Orchestra, Suicide Silence and more

It's been ten long years since iconic, singular Swedish electronic music duo The Knife released their fourth and final album, Shaking the Habitual, and while there absence has been noticeable for die hard fas around the world, the solo work of Karin Dreijer as Fever Ray has helped soften the blow. However it's also been a long six years since their second full-length Plunge, but thankfully the wait for new album Radical Romantics is finally over and it was more than worth the wait. Co-written and produced by their brother and former The Knife bandmate Olof Dreijer, Radical Romantics is the closest thing to new music from The Knife that we're likely to get while also pushing boundaries and experimenting beyond the duo's output.

An album written as an ode to love and its many facets, Krarin's voice is the centrepiece of the record in ways far beyond that of a traditional vocalist, as all manner of otherworldly processing are applied to interesting arrangements, tying the record together. While broadly an "experimental electronic pop" album, Radical Romantics takes cues from genres like new wave, electro, techno and even post-punk across its 10 tracks of innovative & avant-garde yet catchy sounds.
