There's a petition to keep Instagram Chronological, if you too are freaking out

There's a petition to keep Instagram Chronological, if you too are freaking out

Because this is the singular most important thing happening in the world right now.

Yesterday, to the dismay of many, many people around the planet, Instagram announced it'll be organising your Instagram feed according to most popular posts first. You can read up on HERE, but TL;DR: it's basically gonna be the same as Facebook's news feed algorithm. Emotions ranged from, 'What did you expect, it was always gonna happen', too 'FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK', with the majority (besides brands and people who can afford to put money behind their posts) not overly ecstatic about the news.

Well if you feel like doing something about it, one Sarah Heard feels you, and has jumped onto Change.org to start a petition entitled: "Keep Instagram Chronological", which argues:

"#keepinstagramchronological

On March 15, 2016, Instagram blogged that they will be changing the order of your feed to show the moments that *they* think you care about the most, rather than displaying your feed in chronological order.

They say:

"The order of photos and videos in your feed will be based on the likelihood you’ll be interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting and the timeliness of the post. As we begin, we’re focusing on optimizing the order — all the posts will still be there, just in a different order.

If your favorite musician shares a video from last night’s concert, it will be waiting for you when you wake up, no matter how many accounts you follow or what time zone you live in. And when your best friend posts a photo of her new puppy, you won’t miss it.

We’re going to take time to get this right and listen to your feedback along the way. You’ll see this new experience in the coming months."

--- --- ---

Is this something that the community really wants? At the very least, shouldn't the community be able to opt-in, rather than having it mandated that this is how we will now see our feed?

Instagram have advised they will listen to our feedback so that they get this right. So, if you DO NOT want your feed to be presented in an order that you don't have any control over and would prefer to have it presented in the current chronological format or - AT LEAST - have the choice to sort your feed the way you want, please sign the petition so that Instagram can take our feedback on board."

As she points out, Instagram's announcement yesterday did finish with the coda that they're going to listen peoples' feedback, so it'll be interesting to see if they listen to this.

Sign the petition HERE.
