Watch: Popcaan - Unruly Prayer
Dancehall / pop crossover act Popcaan’s new video features his biggest fan – Drake.
After getting his name on the American mainstream music map with a number of summer party hits, 26 year old Jamaican artist Popcaan has been dubbed the ‘boy most likely’ to bring dancehall back to the masses, albeit in a more boy next door way, thanks to his melodic flow, feel-good lyrics and emo rap style. Pitchfork nailed Popcaan’s vibe in one: "unlike previous kings of the hill (most recently,Mavado and Vybz Kartel) he’s not overly concerned with projecting the image of a badman".
In this way, his story parallels that of Drake, so it comes as little surprise he’s found an ally in Drake, who called on Popcaan for stints on skits on his If You're Reading This, It's Too Late mixtape recently. Popcaan buddied up with Drake’s rap crew OVO, and now they’ve all shown up in his latest video, for the gentle, beatless track Unruly Prayer. The video begins by showing him Popcaan at home in Jamaica at a cookout spot with his hometown crew, before Drake, Noah "40" Shebib, and a bunch of other OVO affiliates show up. Watch it below. Popcaan’s debut Where We Come From, came out last year, on Dre Skull’s label Mixpak - you can stream the whole thing HERE. Listen to the Dubbel Dutch-produced track Everything Nice, also below, for a good in-point to Popcaan.
