The Avalanches make a return with Blood Orange-assisted We Will Always Love You

It's the legendary Australian pioneers' first track since their long-overdue 2016 record, Wildflower.

One of 2016's biggest musical moments came via legendary Australian pioneers The Avalanches, who after a very casual 16 years of silence since the release of their infamous Since I Left You record, finally made a grand return with the release of their second album, Wildflower. It was a long-winding, 22-strong collection of tracks that took The Avalanches' instantly recognisable sound forward into current-day, modernising it with newfound techniques and guest features - Danny Brown and MF Doom on its album-preluding return Frankie Sinatra, for example - that brought it into the future.

While The Avalanches stressed that it wouldn't take two decades for the next record to come out, we definitely didn't expect it to happen any time soon - their trademark, sample-based production technique is a painstakingly long one to master and get clearance upon. Thankfully, however, it seems they're true to their word, returning today - after a solid week of teasing via billboards and social media posts - with their first new music since WildflowerWe Will Always Love You.

Featuring the incredible Blood Orange alongside Smokey Robinson and The Roches, We Will Always Love You is a smooth return from The Avalanches that sounds as it great as it does on paper; Dev Hynes' consistently perfect vocal swirling amongst a chorus of voices and slow-building melodies that rise and fall with sweeping sampling and pacing percussion. It doesn't quite capture the early, sample-based nostalgia of Since I Left You (that's not a bad thing, by the way) but it also doesn't feel like an easy, cheap extension of Wildflower; it's an entirely different force somewhere in between, and one that teases their forthcoming record with a certain grace you'd expect from a combination like The Avalanches and Dev Hynes.

It arrives with a message from the group that teases a little more in regards to what to expect from album number three - we'll let you dive into that yourself - but get excited, and stream We Will Always Love You below:
