Premiere: Meet Brisbane's Val Flynn and his left-field collab with Miss Blanks, Werq 4 It

The exciting new single combines a thick club sound with influences in early 2000s hip-hop and R&B.

There's a lot of exciting left-field electronic music coming out of Australia, and it's coming from an incredibly diverse range of musicians. No different is Brisbane's Val Flynn, who with his latest single Werq 4 It, has established himself as one of our most exciting boundary-pushing names. Following on from his debut single Stuck On Repeat earlier this year, Werq 4 It is a genre-pushing collaboration with Australian rapper-of-the-moment Miss Blanks, teaming up with the consistently incredible Blanks for a single that is really quite hard to put your finger on. It's part 00s hip-hop, part euro-dance banger and part pop anthem mixed with Val Flynn's signature touch and the euro-pop confidence of someone completely unexpected, combining this warping production that slides between synthy electronic and more traditional hip-hop-sounding with the vocals of Val Flynn and Miss Blanks.

It's a nice 'come-full-circle' moment for Val Flynn, who admits that it was actually Miss Blanks who encouraged him to branch out into music in the first place: "She pretty much pushed me into the booth and said bitch sing you got a voice! Use it!" The end result is this dynamic and energetic single that is unlike anything else out there in Australia right now, and one that firmly places Val Flynn on the map as an up-and-coming experimental name to watch within Australia. Get to know Val Flynn and Werq 4 It a little better below:

Tell us about yourself?

I’m Val and I like to make music and shake my ass on stage! How you doin?

What’s the vibe music-wise?

I really love a mixture of music from EDM, Hip Hop, R’n’B, Rock etc. if an artist speaks to me, then I can't help but listen to what they’re saying. The Val Flynn sound is a mixture of all these sounds and genres that have inspired me musically through the stages of my life. I also obsess a little when I love a song and tend to listen to it on repeat lol.

What are your production and writing processes like?

I write the majority of my music when I’m having an emotional day lol. When I’m in the studio working on the production side of things we usually ad lib and freestyle a lot too so we get a fully rounded view of what we’re creating in the moment.

Can you tell us about your new single, Werq 4 It?

Werq 4 It ft Miss Blanks is a song I wrote in honour to all the powerful women throughout my life who’ve inspired and continue to inspire me. It’s for all the independent women out there who don’t need a man to make it happen.

Any shows coming up?

I just played Snow Tunes Fest with Miss Blanks and we’ve got Spilt Milk festival coming up this summer! More shows to be announced so be sure to follow me on Instagram or Twitter!

What’s the rest of the year have in store for you?

Finishing up my first EP! It’s been nearly a year of recording and writing this EP and I’ve now narrowed out 95% of it! So excited to release it towards the Christmas & NYE season!

Where can we find more of your music?

Apple Music, Spotify, iTunes, Soundcloud, TIDAL and YouTube is where you can find me. Also on Instagram, you’ll get all the latest updates on new shows and the EP release!
