Meet Keelan Mak and his infectious new single, Weigh You Down
The 20-year-old singer-songwriter/producer/writer promises to be a strong force in Australia's electro-pop scene.
Australia's pop market is proving as strong as ever in 2018, with heavyweights such as Troye Sivan poised to release big albums this year amongst smaller releases by names like Mallrat, Eves Karydas and more. Keelan Mak is a name who may join these in the very near future, if the potential shining through his latest single Weigh You Down is anything to go by. Weigh You Down is a bright and infectious single from its first second, with his light, captivating vocals drawing you in above a hazy, crashing production underneath. The comparisons with the previously mentioned Sivan are obvious, especially on the Perth local's major returning single My My My!, with Keelan Mak's burst onto the scene bringing a similar tall-standing confidence to the table that Sivan did on his return.
With slight injections of R&B, soul, and the single's synthy instrumental, Weigh You Down brings more to the table than many artists do on entire albums and EPs, which is why he's definitely one to watch in the near-future. Get swept up by the single and get to know the man behind the anthem a little better below.
Tell us about yourself?
I’m a 20-year-old singer/songwriter/bedroom producer (emphasis on the bedroom part).
What’s the vibe music-wise?
I’ve always had an inclination towards Pop music but I also grew up on a steady diet of RnB and Alt-Rock. So my music kind of meets somewhere in the middle.
What are your production and writing processes like?
It varies every time. I’m more of a singer, songwriter first, so I barely sit down and just make beats. It’s always making the most minimal of production ideas and getting the song written first. I tend to dwell on ideas for a little too long so i’m always having multiple tracks on the go and chipping away at them all bit by bit.
Can you tell us about your new single, Weigh You Down?
Weigh You Down references those frequent moments where you and your partner are trying to decide what to do, where to go, and you both find yourselves being like, ‘oh well yeah, i’m down to get thai, only if you are though.’ I wanted to take that moment and apply it to a bigger picture (a crumby relationship).
So the song is basically saying, ‘well yeah, I guess we can break up but only if you want to.’
Any shows coming up?
I will be touring this latest single for sure. I’m performing at Arcadia Festival in QLD on the 6th May. There will be a run of other east coast dates and potentially more to add so keep your eyes peeled!
What’s the rest of the year have in store for you?
This year will have more single releases and an E.P. early next year. I’ve been stockpiling demos for the last two years and I’ve been itching to finish them off and have them out in the world - lots of songs and lots of writing.
Where can we find more of your music?
You can find me on Apple Music, Spotify, Soundcloud, Unearthed and probably everywhere else because it’s the internet after all.
