Listen: GRRL Pal - Suggest

"A more innocent version of N.E.R.D."

Pricking up more than a few ears of late with their seductive synth-pop sounds and playful aesthetic are Danny K and Jay Le Kat, the duo behind Perth’s GRRL Pal. The twosome, who were recently triple j Unearthed Feature Artists, have an EP behind them already (2013’s AMAZON), but in 2015 they've been more prolific than ever: recent single highlights Paradise, Dare and Nerve demonstrate a big step up from previous output; with songwriting strong and infectious enough to hint that the group are developing beyond standard bedroom synth-pop into something even more unique. They’re backing up the studio output with a great live show, gigging heavily around Perth town at Jack Rabbit Slims and Jimmy's Den, and performing festival slots at BIGSOUND and Listen Out.

Today GRRL Pal add a new one to the canon - Suggest. In the track, a spritely bedroom-pop beat is teamed with a lilting melody, that Jay’s silky, whispery, vocals work to great effect. Unlike previous single release Paradise, which was more expansive and ravey, this one’s sweet and lighter-than-air: characterising GRRL Pal as an act capable of contrast in their work. It presents kind of like a punchier, disco version of Beach House.

According to Danny, the duo had been holding onto the beat for Suggest for a couple of years, before finally penning some lyrics for it last year while they were touring in the US. "Jay recorded the vocals in one take," said Danny of the track, "then I saw an interview with Dev Hynes (Blood Orange) where he talked about his favourite drum machine and that inspired me to give that machine a shot and change up the drums a bit. I guess we wanted to almost write a less 'in your face', more innocent and suggestive version of Hypnotise U by N.E.R.D.!”

Listen to this gorgeous GRRL Pal number below. Perth fans can catch them playing alongside Young Franco and UV Boi at Jack Rabbit Slim's Halloween Party on Sat Oct 31, details HERE.
