Get to know our Falls Downtown Foster Band - Phocal

Voting closes today, so go sling 'em one for us pretty please!

Today is the last day you can vote in the Falls Festival Foster Band competition, where a bunch of different media outlets nominate a band they love to try and get them on the lineup for the upcoming Falls Festivals, including the WA debut at Falls Downtown. A couple of weeks ago we first INTRODUCED you to our nominee - Phocal - and then we PREMIERED a new single from them. Finally, we sent them a few questions to help you get to know them a little better before they take the stage ( ;) ) at Falls Downtown in Fremantle next year (more info/tickets HERE).

If you are vibing as much as we are, head to the Falls FOSTER BAND VOTING PAGE to cast your vote now!

Tell us about about yourselves?

Hi, we are an electronic duo out of Perth, Western Australia. We met and started doing music together at the Uni we were studying at – WAAPA. From there we started doing peformances in and outside our university. We are both heavily influenced by neo-soul, hip hop, jazz and ‘beats’ style music.

What kinda tunes we talkin’?

Our music has been changing as we have been progressing. We have only been doing this for a little over a year. Our first EP Moods is much more electronic then our newer stuff. Moods has a mix of upbeat/dance style tunes such as Yes and Without You and also slower more moody stuff like Jill and On My Hands. For the most part our music is about capturing feelings.

Production/writing process:

This is something that also varies. Sometimes Jack will write the instrumental by himself and send it to Phoebe who will then lay vocals over, and sometimes we jam it out together in the studio until we have something. There is really no set process for us. Keeping it fresh is the main thing.

Who are you looking forward to seeing at Falls?

Grand Master Flash, MO, Broods and Ta-ku just to name a few.

Who are some other WA acts people might now know yet but should be checking out?

Check out the artists from our close friends Four AM Collective and Boogie Nights, artists such as Max Black, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Chiseko - (who is on our latest single).

What’s the rest of the year have in store?

It's getting close to the end of the year so there won’t be any big releases until next year. We may drop a single towards the end of the month + plenty of shows through summer.

Expect a brand new EP early next year however ;).

Where can we hear more of your music?
