With an infectious energy and unconventional interpretations of Tuareg guitar, Mdou Moctar immediately stands out as one of the most innovative artists in contemporary Saharan music. With songwriter-musician Mahamadou Souleymane, known professionally as Mdou Moctar at their helm, the four piece recently released their Niger Vol.1 EP, sung in their native Niger, announcing a part two of the EP series today, with a preview-track titled; Ibitilan

“Ibitilan is a love song, shares producer and bassist Mikey Coltun. Mdou sings about his love for a woman, comparing her to a beautiful valley with a stream running through it, how her skin is a yellow flower and her smile is like lightning. This particular recording was done in Agadez in 2017 at a wedding. Mdou and I had played three weddings a day for about a month and a half on that trip. It was like bootcamp. I loved it. Ibitilan is one of Mdou's oldest songs and is covered by pretty much every Tuareg guitarist. We've played versions of this song lasting over 20 minutes. It's definitely one of my favorites to play! Recorded as a live version, you can feel the raw, undeniable energy and chemistry of Moctar, rhythm guitarist Ahmoudou Madassane, Mikey Coltun and drummer Souleymane Ibrahim, as they bring the sizzling melodies and grounding rhythm of Ibitilan to life.

With the full Niger Vol. 2 EP out digitally October 25th, a limited vinyl release of both EP’s out March 10th, and Australian + NZ tour dates for 2023, be sure to get across Mdou Moctar and their latest single Ibitilan.

Mdou Moctar’s latest EP Niger Vol. 2 is out October 25th via Remote Control Records.
