Red Bull Music Academy x Boiler Room Chronicles - Australia
Boiler Room delves deeper into the Australian club scene with a new web series.
Well, this is cool.
Red Bull Music Academy has teamed up with Boiler Room (who broadcast net streams of live DJ sets from clubs around the world) to create a special web series that hones in on Australian producer and DJ talent, to be launched with Boiler Room’s biggest Australian show to date. Entitled Chronicles, each episode will focus on an artist or group, and will see them not only perform a special live set for Boiler Room, but also curate a line up of artists past and present who have inspired them as an artist.
Soulful R & B quartet Hiatus Kaiyote, who performed for Boiler Room when they came to Australia in 2013 (you can watch that show HERE), are the first cab off the rank to play Chronicles, which kicks off in Melbourne on Nov 21. They’ve chosen their mentor, Brooklyn-based producer, composer, beatboxer and pianist Taylor McFerrin, to play their show. McFerrin first noticed Hiatus Kaiyote on his Australian tour and gave them a leg up into his US network of soul royalty, things have gone pretty damn well for the HK gang ever since. Lead singer Nai Palm even guested on McFerrin's track, The Antidote (below).
McFerrin is a singular talent and an international treasure held in high esteem by the industry, having already opened for Erykah Badu, The Roots, Nas, Talib Kweli and Robert Glasper. McFerrin pulls together 60s soul, golden era hip hop and free form jazz and electronica for incredible results – his debut album Early Riser, out on Flying Lotus’ sound-pioneering Brainfeeder label, came out in June this year, Pitchfork summed up the listening pleasure of the album well with “this is an album built for slow weekend mornings spent in bed with a loved one".
Hiatus Kaiyote have also selected long time pals Clever Austin and Silentjay w/Jace XL, and have arranged for a set to be created and designed especially for the event by Kirkis. Red Bull Music Academy x Boiler Room Chronicles will be held in a secret location (chosen by the band) and are private, RSVP guestlist only affairs. You can RSVP here. A limited numbers of tickets will be given away via the RBMA Facebook Page closer to the event.
But hey - if you don’t make it onto the list, you can revel in the beauty of The Boiler Room being what it is - an online streaming project of live shows you can't get to - and watch the show from home.
